Administration officials disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official procedure for terminating staff.

While Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a union representing federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services used by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver critical services to the public nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be ended soon.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, military personnel, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, labor groups sought a court injunction to prevent the administration from carrying out any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge directed the administration to provide specifics on termination strategies, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been brought back to carry out layoffs.

A report contended that a government shutdown restricts the authority of the government to carry out firings, citing guidance that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated before the shutdown began.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs occurred on the same day that government employees received only a partial paycheck for the end of the previous month but not the start of the current month, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our government running,” the advocate said. The flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid during the shutdown.
