Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
