Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual challenge facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A US startup can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, there are reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
