"When are you chatting with the band?" an inquiry arrives. "My request was to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There's just a key snag: I also longs to be Haim's fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Several celebrated admirers have also begged for the position.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the most iconic bands, they're a inseparable unit. Their videos repeatedly depict them striding in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such boundless exuberance you can't help but think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'After your show, I got a guitar'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the biggest compliment. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire others to make music."

"So everyone gets an invitation to be the next part of the family."

Award Nod

The group are connecting from home, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I follow the lists every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the honor isn't lost on the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant achievement," says Alana. "But we're just thankful for the women that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Candor

The album emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The lyrics detail endings and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they want to be.

"I adore description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in ignoring the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That recent confidence called for a fresh approach – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The trio's openness fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal horror stories.

A former partner left Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Future

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their place in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an global audience.

Yet the sister act will always be their top focus.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
