Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of Deluge of Backlash Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the period after the flight.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was drowned out under the tide of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the followers whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she said.
She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had resulted from the flight, such as increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that passed the edge of space.
The diverse crew also included leaders in different industries.
The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
