A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled significant questions over construction quality.
